Putting Emotion, Heart, and Soul into Industry 4.0 Solutions
Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) get a bad rap for their potential to render certain jobs redundant. However, ML and AI have zero utility without the data captured via sensing technologies. So - what about the role of industrial automation enabled by IoT considering the future of work? The problem with most technology developed today is that technologists developed it – who, by their training and by the expectations put upon them by their employers, are NOT inclined to consider the human condition and the implications their work has on humanity. That is the path of least resistance but not the optimal path for humanity. Some big questions this industry needs to address are How can you put emotion, heart, and soul into your industry 4.0 solutions? How can you place the human towards the center of your thinking? We're honored to host Domhnaill Hernon, VP Innovation Research, Nokia Bell Labs, for this meetup. In this talk, Domhnaill will share how the human condition can be considered deep within your R&D and business practice and how those considerations will provide you with differentiation in the marketplace. He will discuss how, for the foreseeable future, the combination of human and machine will be more powerful than either on their own – it is not an either/or argument. This will be particularly true when the task's complexity is anything just slightly more than mundane and where creativity is required to generate a solution. About Domhnaill Hernon Domhnaill Hernon is an award-winning technology, innovation, and creativity executive. Domhnaill received an undergrad in Aeronautical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Aerodynamics from the University of Limerick and an executive MBA from Dublin City University, Ireland. He previously led R&D organizations and developed and executed strategies to overcome the "innovation valley of death." He recently founded a new initiative to fuse art and engineering/science to develop solutions that humanize technology. Domhnaill's work has been featured in Wired Magazine, Times Square, SXSW, Nasdaq, MWC, Ars Electronica, TEDx, Inspirefest, to name just a few, and he advises innovation and cultural programs globally.
Industry 4.0 - AgTech: Entrepreneur Stories with Adam Greenberg (iUNU)
The global human population is expected to grow to over 9 billion by 2050. Feeding this population using conventional farming methods requires a large amount of land and water, presenting a significant challenge in the sustainable management of crops and food as the population grows. Technology, such as IoT and robotics, for farmers, can be used for soil analysis, monitoring plant and crop growth, collecting field maps, and processing satellite images of land and crops. AgTech, the intersection of Agriculture and Technology, helps improve yield and reduce resource - water, energy, land - needs. According to PitchBook, AgTech startups raised $2.7 billion in 2019 and had already raised $2.2 billion in the first two quarters of 2020. For this meetup, we're honored to host Adam Greenberg, Founder & CEO, iUNU. Adam founded iUNU in 2013 to revolutionize the greenhouse industry by using machine vision technology. His passion for agriculture came from his father, who is a botanist and entrepreneur. He is a fifth-generation native of San Francisco and lives in Seattle, where he enjoys traveling and the outdoors. Adam & iUNU have been recognized with a Medal of Excellence nomination from Greenhouse Grower, best new indoor growing technology from United Fresh Produce Association, and Adam was recently named to GPN's 40 Under 40 Class of 2020. Adam has also been a speaker & panelist at universities, associations, conferences such as Hemp Industry Daily, MjBizCon, Indoor Ag-Con, and University of Maryland's annual MAVRIC technology conference. He earned his degrees in Finance and Entrepreneurship from the University of Washington and is a former financial analyst at Amazon. iUNU is an industrial computer vision company headquartered in Seattle, with offices in San Francisco. Connecting plants, facilities, and people through a single interface, LUNA turns commercial greenhouses into precise, predictable, demand-based manufacturers. An AI born in the heart of Seattle; trained in Silicon Valley and the greenhouses of Skagit Valley; and now accessible from everywhere.
Examples of Building Large IoT Fleets in Multiple Industries
The IoT installed based approached 27 billion devices in 2019 and is expected to increase to 75 billion devices by 2025. Every industry is impacted by this rise of IoT devices, enabling new efficiency and productivity levels across industrial and commercialization processes in each industry. As the number of devices increases, so does the need to overcome technical and device management challenges in large IoT fleets. For this meetup, we're honored to host Ross Porter, Sales Engineer, Balena. Ross will give a fun tour through examples of large IoT fleets, a brief discussion of the underlying business model, and he will highlight specific technical challenges in growing and managing such fleets across industries. This is the first part of a two-part series; the second part will dive deeper into the technical details hosted in a future meetup. About the Speaker Ross Porter spends most of his time with IoT customers. Being at balena.io gives him an interesting vantage point across a wide variety of companies that use Balena's platform to grow and manage their IoT fleets (Balena has been doing this for 7 years now). Ross is a software engineer, has spent most of his career in Seattle startups in a variety of roles, and thus loves to talk about business models, startups, and technology. About Balena Balena is a complete set of tools for building, deploying and managing fleets of connected IoT devices. It provides infrastructure and tools for fleet owners so they can focus on developing their applications and growing their fleets with as little friction as possible. Balena enables devices and their running services to be managed, monitored, and updated through the web dashboard or through its API, via the CLI and SDK. Balena was established in 2013.
The Future of Personalized Connected Healthcare
"The Future of Personalized Connected Healthcare" Andrew Baker Maxim Integrated Healthcare has become more personalized due to the focus on making individuals more responsible for their own health and wellbeing. The current COVID-19 pandemic is reinforcing the need for remote connected healthcare to better manage the needs of today’s society. Telehealth with remote patient monitoring provides a convenient way to remain in contact with patients whilst maintaining a high level of care. Availability of real time and historical measurements data is critical to provide actionable insights using analytics. Access to health centric wearable consumer devices is empowering individuals to identify potential health issues before they become chronic. This presentation will explore the ways in which remote patient monitoring is revolutionizing the way care will be increasingly delivered.
