how to organize after the election

The holidays are here—and after the year we’ve had, they’re hitting a little differently.

Maybe you’re gathering with family who don’t all agree on politics. Maybe you’re heading back to your hometown, wondering how it drifted so far right. Or maybe you’re just trying to rest before gearing up for what’s ahead.

Wherever you are this holiday season, this is a moment to reflect, regroup, and recommit.

Because 2025 is right around the corner—and what we do now determines what’s possible in 2026.

This post is about choosing your role in that fight.

One Movement, Three Strategic Paths

Over the next two years, we need to do three big things:

  1. Say NO to Project 2025 and everything it stands for
  2. Push Democrats in power to fight like hell—locally, statewide, and nationally
  3. Win key elections in 2026 to break MAGA’s grip on power

These aren’t vague ideas. They’re concrete plays, and every one of us can plug into at least one of them, depending on where we live.

Use This Holiday Break to Find Your Role

Before we get tactical, pause and ask yourself:

  • Where do I live—red state, blue city, swing district?
  • Who are my local electeds?
  • What kind of leverage do I have here?
  • What’s my capacity in the coming year?

Use this downtime to reflect. Talk to people. Maybe even bring it up over dessert (gently). A lot of folks are looking for a way in—they just need someone to open the door.

The Three Plays, Broken Down

Play 1: Say No to Project 2025

If you live in a blue state or district, you’re perfectly positioned to push your elected Democrats to take bold, public stances against the MAGA agenda.

Your job is to:

  • Demand they oppose Trump’s worst nominees and policies
  • Cheerlead them when they do
  • Make noise when they don’t

This play is especially important early in 2025 as Trump’s team begins rolling out harmful executive orders and legislative proposals.

Best for you if:
You’re in a safely blue district with Democratic reps who need encouragement (or pressure) to fight harder.

Play 2: Push Dems to Go on Offense

Do you live in a blue state with a Democratic trifecta—governor and state legislature? Or a blue city with progressive local officials?

Use that power.

Organize to make your state or city:

  • A sanctuary for vulnerable communities
  • A leader on climate, labor, and reproductive rights
  • A firewall against federal authoritarianism

Best for you if:
You live in places like California, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, Washington, or Oregon—or in progressive localities anywhere in the country.

Play 3: Protect and Win the 2026 Elections

If you’re in a swing state or district, you’re on the front lines of saving democracy.

Your job is to:

  • Hold MAGA electeds accountable for every action that harms your state
  • Support and organize for future Democratic candidates
  • Defend against voter suppression and election sabotage

2025 is the year to build your team, sharpen your message, and start laying the groundwork.

Best for you if:
You live in places like Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, or Alaska.

What You Can Do Over the Holidays

Even while you’re home for the holidays, here are a few low-stress, high-impact actions to take:

  • Text a few friends about forming a local accountability group in January
  • Make a spreadsheet of your local, state, and federal reps
  • Listen to a podcast or read a book on fighting authoritarianism
  • Host a conversation with trusted family or friends about what they want to do next
  • Write a letter to the editor of your hometown paper calling out Project 2025

The fight continues even from the couch.

What’s Next in the Series

In our next post, we’ll kick off 2025 with a clear focus: how to stop Project 2025 from being implemented unchecked—and how to organize early, often, and effectively.

Next Post Drops: January 17, 2025
Title: No Is a Complete Sentence: Fighting Back on Project 2025

Final Word

You don’t have to do everything. You just have to do something—and do it with purpose.

Pick your play. Use this quiet moment to get ready. And when the new year begins, we’ll be moving together.

Because none of us wins alone. But together, we will.
