Introducing My Raspberry Pi Vinyl Streaming Project

Ever dreamed of combining the warm, analog charm of vinyl records with the convenience and modern audio quality of Apple HomePods? I certainly did. After exploring numerous solutions, I built my own vinyl streaming system using a Raspberry Pi, allowing me to wirelessly stream records directly to HomePods with crystal-clear AirPlay 2 sound. In this series, I’ll walk you through each step of how I made this happen—and how you can do it too.

Vinyl and HomePods: Why They’re Better Together

Vinyl records deliver a unique listening experience that digital formats can rarely replicate. Their tactile nature, the rich sound quality, and the process of engaging with physical media create an immersive experience. On the other hand, Apple HomePods deliver fantastic sound quality, intelligent audio calibration, and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. Combining these two can elevate your music-listening experience dramatically.

By streaming vinyl records wirelessly to HomePods, you enjoy the best of both worlds:

  • Authentic Analog Sound: Preserve the unique character of vinyl records.
  • Wireless Freedom: Place HomePods anywhere in your home, untethered by audio cables.
  • Multiroom Listening: Enjoy vinyl playback simultaneously in multiple rooms.
  • Modern Convenience: Easily control volume and playback with your iOS devices.

Introducing the Raspberry Pi Solution

To bridge the gap between analog and digital, I turned to the Raspberry Pi, a versatile, affordable, and powerful microcomputer, enhanced by a high-quality audio input/output device (the HiFiBerry DAC+ADC Pro). Together with open-source software such as DarkIce, Icecast, and OwnTone, I built a seamless solution for capturing analog audio from my record player and transmitting it wirelessly to AirPlay 2-enabled HomePods.

Here’s a high-level overview of what we’ll cover in detail throughout this blog series:

This introductory post sets the stage, but we’ll delve into specifics in each subsequent article. My goal is to provide clear, actionable guidance that will enable you to replicate this setup confidently.

Who Is This Series For?

Whether you’re an avid vinyl collector, a tech enthusiast, or someone looking to blend analog audio with modern streaming convenience, this blog series is designed for you. I’ll explain every step in approachable language—no prior Raspberry Pi or Linux expertise required.
